Peter Maxwell Davies' "The Lighthouse" was performed on 29th and 30th July as part of the Cantiere Montepulciano.

La RINASCITA

Bravo to the three singers, Sean Clayton, Paul Carey Jones and Andrew Slater, bravo to the conductor, Paul MacAlindin, chosen by the composer, and congratulations to the director, Andrew Steggall, directing an integral production around the revolving, spiraling lighthouse.

Bravissimi i tre interpreti in scena (a Montepulciano rispettivamente Sean Clayton, Paul Carey Jones e Andrew Slater), bravissimo il direttore, Paul MacAlindin, scelto dal compositore, e molto appropriata la struttura centrale che riempie il palcoscenico, questo faro che si muove con una scala elicoidale e che permette di sviluppare la regia intrigante di Andrew Steegall.   Franzina Ancona 31st July 2007

The director, Andrew Steggall, has perfectly solved the interconnectivity of the scenes with a unified, contemporary representation of the Lighthouse's multiple timelines.  The 3 singers, Sean Clayton, Paul Carey Jones and Andrew Slater were vocally impeccable under the accurate conducting of Paul MacAlindin.

I regista Andrew Steggall ha risolto alla perfezione l'intereccio costruendoun unico dispositivo scenicoche rappresenta contemporaneamente il presente il passato della Lighthouse. L'esecuzione si è rivelata molto ben equilibrata presentando una parte musicale ed una parte visiva che si sono reciprocamente integrate, fornendo uno spettacolo insolitamente e felicemente unitario. Le parti vocali sono state affidate a Sean Clayton (tenore), Paul Carey Jones (baritono) ed Andrew Slater (basso), particolarmente a loro agio con le difficoltà insite nella vocalità specificatamente richiesta dalle loro parti, mentre Paul MacAlindin è stato un convincente direttore d.orchestra, che per l.occasione era la .Young Janacek Philarmonic Orchestra..
Inoltre, tutto ha dato la netta impressione di essere stato preparato con meticolosità, serietà e professionalità da tutti gli artisti impegnati, premiati al termine della recita da un sincero e cordiale successo.  Claudio Listanti La Voce Italia 1st August, 2007

DRAMMATURGIA

"The excellence of the whole performance is attributed, obviously, to the director:  Paul MacAlindin, who knew how to distil with equal precision the shape of the melodic arches and the timbral effects which coloured the resonant palette of the score." 

L’eccellenza del risultato complessivo va però attribuita, ovviamente, al direttore: Paul MacAlindin, da tempo in sintonia con il mondo musicale di Maxwell Davies, ha saputo distillare con uguale precisione il nitore delle arcate melodiche e gli effetti timbrici chiamati a “sporcare” la tavolozza sonora della partitura. La Young Janácek Philharmonic Orchestra risponde con recettività ed entusiasmo e Andrew Steggall realizza, nei giochi di luce come nella recitazione dei cantanti, una di quelle regie che si plasmano sulla musica, anziché remarle contro. Per il resto la messinscena è semplicissima, ma di enorme capacità evocativa: una struttura elicoidale che, ruotando, rappresenta ora il faro, ora il suo interno. Si può fare ancora grande teatro con pochi mezzi, se c’è molto talento. È questo in fondo il messaggio che, da quando Henze lo fondò nel 1976, trasmette il Cantiere di Montepulciano. SIPARIO

Soprattutto il regista Andrew Steggall e lo scenografo Jon Bausor: nelle loro mani l'opera pareva un film, proprio un giallo senza vie d'uscita. La Young Janacek Philharmonic, diretta da Paul MacAlindin, ha realizzato egregiamente la complessa partitura. E ancor più bravi i tre ufficiali: il tenore Sean Clayton, il baritono Paul Carey Jones e il basso Andrew Slater.  Virgilio Celletti Sipario 2/8/7
